The Grand Tour is much more of a Top Gear redux than not, and so in the spirit of the preceding show the trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May have produced their first TGT special. For those impatient to watch it without even knowing what it’s about, the first episode of the two-part special will stream on Amazon Prime this Friday, December 30th. The second part airs the next day. You can watch the trailer above.

The premise here is that Andy Wilman thinks that the classic beach buggy is a terrible vehicle, and the boys are eager to prove him wrong. They head to Namibia, a place where we can clearly understand that there’s a whole lot of sand, and hijinks ensue. As they always do.

Now, with the original show on the BBC, the specials were a bit hit or miss. Recall the abysmal India special, and the mixed bag that was the final Top Gear special in Patagonia. Given the setup, it’s safe to assume that the Namibia adventure will be more about getting stuck often, and flinging sand at each other (also often), than any international controversy. Then again, with Clarkson involved, you can never be too sure. We’d venture a guess that the lack of the structural trappings of the new show, the special is likely to be a little looser and a little more fun, so we’re hopeful it’ll be entertaining. We’ll tune in later this week and find out for ourselves.
